Introduction
Translate a whole Joomla 6 site in Joomla's own edit forms, with AI and machine translation, bulk jobs in the background, XLIFF for translators, hreflang and translated URLs. Built to keep translated pages fast.
Short description
Long description
Speedy Translate makes a Joomla 6 site multilingual without copying its content. Each article, menu item or module stays one item, and its translations are stored with it: open the edit form you already use, click a flag under a field, type, and save every language at once. There are no copies to create, link and keep in step, and nothing new to learn.
Version 3 rebuilt the translation engine. A page looks up translations only for the rows it shows, each query is analysed once and cached, and Speedy Translate shares Joomla's database connection instead of opening its own. On our benchmark site, with 10,000 articles translated into two languages, a French page took 345 to 498 ms and 133 MB of memory with version 2. With version 3 it takes 41 to 68 ms and under 5 MB, and on five of the six pages measured Speedy Translate adds 2 to 8 ms to Joomla's own time (Joomla 6.1, PHP 8.4, MySQL 8.4, no page cache; your own times will differ).
Translate content
- In Joomla's edit forms: articles, categories, menu items, modules, custom fields and field groups, tags, contacts, banners, news feeds and users. Titles, aliases, editor text, images, links, meta descriptions, module and menu options, and custom field values.
- Always know what is left: Batch translations lists every item of a content type with its status in each language: translated, outdated or not translated. Click a title to translate it in its own form.
- Outdated translations flagged: each translation remembers the original it was made from. Change the English text and its French and German tabs are marked, until you update them or tick Still right for the new original.
- Options per language: a language stores only the module, menu item or article options it changes, so a later change to the original reaches every language.
- Two multilingual modes: the Speedy mode, where each item stays one item with its translations, or Joomla's Multilingual Associations, where Speedy Translate creates and links each language's copy from the same language tabs.
Machine and AI translation
- When you ask for it: press Translate from en-GB in a language tab, read the preview, then Use this translation. Nothing is sent to a provider until you ask.
- Six providers, your own account: Google Cloud Translation, DeepL and Yandex, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with your prompt and the model you type in, so a new model works the day it is released. The provider bills you at its own price; Speedy Translate charges nothing for it.
- Glossary: brand names kept as they are, and terms translated your way, for every language or one. Inline translation, bulk jobs and the language string tools all follow it.
- A provider per language: for example DeepL for German and Claude for Japanese, each with its own account.
- Long texts come back whole: they are cut between HTML elements, so headings, lists and tables survive, and a translation that fails is never saved half done.
Bulk translation and translators
- Bulk translation in the background: pick content types and languages, see what would be translated and roughly what it would cost at the providers' list prices, then start. The job runs from Joomla's Scheduled Tasks, so you can close the page, and you can pause, resume or cancel it at any time. It only fills gaps: a translation someone typed stays as it is.
- Translation coverage: the dashboard shows how much of each language is translated and up to date, per content type, each row a link to the items behind it.
- XLIFF for translation agencies: export what needs translating as XLIFF 1.2, which Trados, memoQ, Phrase and OmegaT open, and import the file your translator sends back. A unit whose original changed since the export is listed, not imported, so an old translation never lands on new text.
Search engines and visitors
- hreflang: every page lists the same page in each published language, plus x-default, following the settings of Joomla's Language Filter.
- Translated URLs: a translated article, category or tag alias gives each language its own address, such as /fr/voyages/paris-au-printemps.
- Language switcher: real links that work without JavaScript and appear in the page source, in four layouts: drop-down, inline, pop-over and off-canvas.
- Smart Search in the visitor's language: a search in French finds the French text and opens the French page.
- Light on visitors' pages: no jQuery, and only the switcher's files and the flags of your own languages. The editing scripts load only for users who can translate.
Language strings
- INI translations: find any string in any language file, change it, and save it as an override that updates do not undo. Suggest a translation asks your provider.
- Context translation: turn on Translate in context, then click an underlined text on your site or in the administrator, type and press Enter.
- Syntax checker: finds the lines of your language files that Joomla cannot read, and opens each file at the error.
- Duplicate, missing and orphan keys: the strings defined twice in a file, the strings a language lacks, and the strings no code uses any more.
- Overrides import and export: your string overrides and their backups in a zip, to put back later or on another site.
Getting started
- Setup check: the dashboard installs language packs from Joomla's language server, publishes content languages, turns on the Language Filter and its hreflang tags, and publishes a language switcher, each with one click.
- Moving from Falang: Migrate from Falang shows what it will copy, copies the translations of articles, categories, menus, modules, custom fields and Solidres, keeps the ones you already made unless you ask to replace them, and leaves Falang's own data untouched.
Works with your content
- Joomla: everything listed under Translate content.
- Solidres: properties, room types, extras, tariffs, coupons, custom fields, facilities, experiences and more.
- Restaurant Management System: restaurants, menus, menu groups, dishes and promotions.
- Solidshop: its categories and tags (Solidshop translates its products itself).
- HikaShop, J2Store, JEvents, K2, SP Page Builder and Creative Contact Form.
- Your own extension: it can ship its own Speedy Translate adapter.
Speedy Translate's interface is in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Hebrew, and follows Atum's dark mode.
Editions and subscription
- Speedy Translate Lite is the free edition: content translation in the edit forms, Google, DeepL and Yandex, hreflang, translated URLs and the switcher. Pro installs over Lite and keeps every translation and setting.
- Pro is a subscription: updates through Joomla's updater with your Download ID, and unlimited support tickets for one domain, while it runs. When it ends, Pro keeps working; updates and support stop until you renew.
- Coming from Speedy Translate 2: download Pro 3 from your account and install it over 2.x. Your translations stay. Joomla's updater cannot fetch 3.0 for most 2.x sites, as version 2 never passed it the Download ID; from 3.0 it does.
Requirements
- Joomla 6.0 or later
- PHP 8.3 or later
- MySQL or MariaDB, through either of Joomla's drivers, MySQLi or MySQL (PDO). PostgreSQL is not supported.
