Introduction

Content Construction

The powerful award-winning content extension for Joomla with more than 4 million downloads (and counting)!

WHAT IS K2?

K2 provides an out-of-the box integrated solution featuring rich content forms for items (think of Joomla articles with additional fields for article images, videos, image galleries and attachments), nested-level categories, tags, comments, a system to extend the item base form with additional fields (similar to CCK for those acquainted with Drupal or ACF in WordPress), a powerful plugin API to extend item, category and user forms, ACL, frontend editing, sub-templates & a lot more!

Using K2, you can transform your Joomla website to a news/magazine site with author blogs, product catalogs, work portfolio, knowledge base, download/document manager, directory listing, event listing & more, all this bundled under one package!

Give K2 a try & you'll instantly love it! It's easy to use and fun to develop websites with! If you need any help or want to contribute to the project, join us at the K2 community.

FEATURES

Since K2 is extensible with additional fields to its base item form, you can easily create category-specific content types, e.g. article, blog post, product page, directory listing.

K2 offers as standard:
- Nested-level categories
- Tags
- Distinct item image (useful for articles/catalogs), generated in 6 configurable dimensions by default to allow precise image size loading for your site's frontpage, categories/tags etc., side modules and items.
- Image galleries
- Videos
- Attachments
- User pages (author blogs/user profiles)
- Commenting, integrated with Google's reCaptcha & Akismet
- Smart ACL for frontend editing
- Unique plugin system to extend item, category & user forms
- AJAX based frontend editing & comments moderation
- Rest-like JSON/JSONP/RSS/Atom content output
- Native advanced SEF options
- Google Structured Data built-in
- Facebook OpenGraph & Twitter Cards support
- Built-in media manager
- 100% mobile-friendly backend user interface - a joy to edit your content on-the-go
- Total options control, with minimal hassle. Instead of configuring category options over and over, use K2's category option inheritance to allow one category to inherit all options of another category! Or create categories that act as "configuration templates" for other categories (e.g. one set for news/blog posts, another for products, a third for events and so on) and assign them to groups of categories.
- The most advanced, yet easiest to use templating system (with multiple template override sets) to create any type of content you want - the true power of K2!
- Secure & robust by design. In its nearly 14 year history (as of Jan 2023), K2 has only had low priority vulnerabilities you can count in just one hand, which were swiftly addressed. Just search for "K2" in the Joomla Vulnerable Extensions List (VEL - https://extensions.joomla.org/vulnerable-extensions/resolved/) to verify directly.
- K2 aims for stability and strong backwards compatibility with regular incremental improvements & fixes. No "move fast and break things" mentality here.

K2 integrates fully with the Joomla API, which means any third-party Joomla plugins will function properly within the K2 component & modules, either in the frontend or backend.

AMAZING PERFORMANCE

Pixeden, Groupama, Harvard, High Court of Australia, Amnesty International, Arturia are just some of the thousands of top Joomla sites around the world, fully powered by K2.

K2 also significantly outperforms the default Joomla article system in any real-world configuration, especially in high-traffic scenarios like media/news sites.

COMPATIBILITY

K2 is currently compatible with Joomla versions 1.5, 2.5 & 3.x on servers running PHP versions 5, 7 & 8.

Starting January 2023, K2 is provided in a rolling release development model by default. These rolling releases are identified by their build number/date. Point releases will still be used for reference, so it's easy for example to define compatibility with current Joomla & PHP versions. You can read more about these changes here: https://getk2.org/blog/k2-v2-11-rolling-releases-joomla-4-and-more

DEPENDENCIES & LICENSE

To utilize the built-in media & gallery features you need to install AllVideos (free) & Simple Image Gallery Pro, both provided by JoomlaWorks.

K2 is developed by JoomlaWorks & licensed under the GNU/GPL license.

WHAT NEXT?

Try K2! Install it, hit the "import" button to bring your Joomla articles inside K2, start playing with the component to see the flexibility it provides first-hand. Moreover? You no longer need a dozen of components & even more modules/plugins to do things like run a news site or a blog.

Visit the K2 Community website: getk2.org

Well first of all this component is great, but why so low rating, well like someone said this is cms in cms.If u install this 98% of all plugins, components, modules u simply cant use, and whole your website now depends of only this developer. Its easy u can import all text, but what if u choose to not use k2 anymore,u will be in problem. If u use k2 for some small site that later dont need much modification k2 is excellent choice but if u need for site u want to upgrade all time, then is bad.If this was joomla core modification then this component would be one of best ever, but with this idea, to completely replace something that joomla is all about,is soo wrong. But ether way joomla developers have much to learn from this component.

Phenominal!

If I had a way to replace all the core Joomla 1.5 functions with this I would do it. Awesome content management system...

What would make this even better is if we had an admin template which was K2 aware and would allow you to select K2 functions to replace the core Joomla content functions. That would be way cool!
This component is perfect for me, having to create a separate area of my site that serves as a database with nested categories and custom content types. Until this extension came along, I was forced to use a Wiki for this purpose, which is excellent and easy to use, but I really wanted this database to be a part of my site and manageable through the site directly. This extension does that for me and I couldn't be happier with it.

Not only does it function as I need it to, it's also pretty, which is a plus since I am trying to retain visual appeal on my site as well as a wealth of knowledge.

The support community is also excellent and the developer addresses concerns immediately. This is to be expected from JW, who has consistently maintained an excellent reputation as a developer.

This extension will do exactly what I need it to until Joomla 1.6 is released, which (hopefully) should have both nested categorization and a built-in CCK. I hope anyway. If not, we will still have K2!

IE8 problems....

Posted on 28 July 2009
it is a great product except it has problems in IE8. Also the main site appears to be down today.

I get an error : HTML Parsing Error: Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917)

Works great in Fire Fox. I don't use K2 as the main page, I use it as link pages (for reviews) how do you fix that?

I have asked questions on the forum a few times since June and no one has replied yet to them.

very good but..

Posted on 24 July 2009
I think this component is really good, but, as others said this is a cms in a cms. It does not strongly integrate but it works in parallel. I have to leave a lot of extensions I've installed first (eg. comments..)and import all of my articles. This extension is better for who starts a new website.

This should be the one and only core of joomla.

Great job, anyway!

Encouraging

I am pretty sure I will someday be able to change my rating to Excellent.

There is stil room for enhancement. A couple examples:

- possibility whether or not we want to use the differnet sizes of image

- possibility to keep the original image without resizing

- possibility to choose to display the category image instead of item image

- in admin list the items under the categories instead of seperate tab

- possibility to link 1 item to different categories
First of all: it's nice to see that other developers care of the Webdesigners wishes.

Content Construction is a feature which should been includet to Joomla, but apparently the Dev-Team will not register that and it seems they ignore Communtiy wishes.

For K2 and all the other CCK. Although one has to say, they are all still in development and it is certainly still happen, but these components are currently useless.

Without the possibility to run the values of the new fields also in modules, all the CCKs for Joomla are failed. The same game for the output of the categories. Joomsuite Ressorce show the practice of Joomla CCKs - a lot of functions but not one of them cares of the "standard"-functionality we need. It is not possible to have a simple list of the category, just with "title, teaser, own field, own field and a pagination. Instead they develop a lot of features, only extremly big sites need.

Take an example of Drupals CCK in conjunction with the views module. In the article I can define fields and anywhere else i can set outputs. In the Content, Modules(Blocks), etc. etc.

This is the biggest shortcoming of all CCKs of Joomla. The issue and re-use of the new fields in modules and Category pages is not given.

For professional Frontend Developer typical # fail.
Owner's reply: Some clarifications:
- K2 DOES DISPLAY extra fields in the content module (mod_k2_content). I'm referring to the latest v2 release.
- I don't know why you mention Joomsuite Resources - but K2 is simple when it comes to laying out the options you want for each category. This is the type of flexibility that not even Joomla has.
- Lastly, K2 is not a CCK - it's a content component WITH CCK-like features and a very powerful plugin API which altogether make K2 a lot more powerful compared to the original CCK for Drupal or any other Joomla CCK solution.

K2 handles the main problem of designers (the notorious "itemID" issue) very successfully, by defining and displaying layout options per category and per item and not *just* per menu item.

My point is: you need to take a closer look to K2. I can understand that your views mainly come from the fact that there is no K2 documentation yet and that is because the "final" stable release is to be released on July 27th. After that, the K2 team will work on proper documentation and video tutorials.
I have been waiting for this type of extension for going onto a year! I honestly believe the lack of this component is the only real reason for other CMSes to still exist-namely Drupal and CCK.

The Implementation shows a ton of foresight, evidenced by the use of Joomla's inherent User tables instead of creating new ones.

Unfortunately it is not perfect yet- Noticeable a BETA version.

The most frustrating bug is in front end submissions. If a user has authoring rights, but not publishing rights, it bombs out after the article is submitted.

Also, no matter who the author is, in the back-end it is listed as an administrator.

I cannot wait for this to be completed!!
Owner's reply: We're getting there, don't worry.

As you can imagine, K2 is not only a big component in terms of code but also in terms of functions and how all these combine together. It's natural that there will be bugs, but all will be fixed when v2.0.0 "final" is released. And we're very close to get there :)
With what K2 is capable of doing, one can only give a positive feedback. I would request the developers to clarify if K2 supports pagination in content items. I have a few extremely long articles paginated in com_content. When i copy the same articles in K2, the articles appear without any pagination. It would be a real help if someone can tell me how to use pagination in K2 content items.
Owner's reply: K2 supports article pagination in both listing pages and inside the article page, by using the "page break" plugin. K2 parses all content plugins in Joomla! like native Joomla! articles do. :)

So far So good
